The Future of Media: Adapt or Perish

The Baltic Centre for Media Excellence, together with partners SIA Komercizglītības centrs and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, recently hosted a thought-provoking discussion “The Future of Media – Adapt or Perish”. The event was organized within the framework of the project “Latvian Media Industry Competence Centre” and took place during the Latvian Association of Journalists’ annual conference and the Excellence Award ceremony.

The central question on the table was simple yet crucial: How can media adapt to the digital age without losing their audiences and the quality of journalism?

Who was in the room?

The discussion was moderated by Gunta Sloga, Executive Director of the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence, and brought together leading voices from Latvia’s media landscape:

Anda Rožukalne, Professor and Researcher at Rīga Stradiņš University

Uldis Salmiņš, Board Member of the Latvian Regional Media Association and the Latvian Press Publishers’ Association

Inga Alika-Stroda, Lead Expert in Digital Strategy and Development at Latvia’s Public Broadcaster

Their diverse expertise created a rich exchange of ideas on the challenges and opportunities shaping the industry.

It’s not only about technology. While digital tools are important, the unique role of journalism and its ability to engage audiences must remain at the core.

Stronger collaboration is essential. Greater solidarity within Latvia’s media environment is needed to address challenges collectively.

Resilience is possible. Despite uncertainty, Latvian media are ready to adapt and continue serving the public interest.
